wah waaaa: beginning embroidery trials

i'm bad at embroidery right now i guess. understandable, i just started.

the texture i picked is wrong but i'm not sure there is a "right" one in this material.

it will take about 40 hours to complete one at the pace i'm going. hopefully i'll get a little faster. i'm not used to really long projects. i like to work on one thing until it's finished and the sooner it's done, the happier i am. this is yet another test of patience and trust.

and it won't look like hair....which might be okay with me or it might not. i might have to be okay with this being "lost in translation" and looking at it for what it is (or will be).

first, i picked this drawing because i thought it would be the easiest in terms of color and getting it to look like hair.
then i traced out some of the main directional guidelines. the blue marker disappears with water!

i had wanted to do some free form fabric dying for some background, but i think i'll just try and get the sewing part down first.

then i tacked down 2 different thicknesses of parachute rope in areas i want to have more dimension. the orange and white will be wrapped completely and not show at all. but i know, it looks like a mess right now and i'm dreading taming the ends which just fray like crazy.

then i just jumped in with a handful of colors (eventually there will be 9-12 colors on this) and this is about 3 hours of work, not including the first two steps.
