reception: Wide Open

tonight was the reception for the open call show "Wide Open" at RomanSusan Annex. there was a kick off drawing workshop before Thanksgiving where participants could draw on all the walls (lined with paper by moi) using prompts (or not) by the delightful Polly Yates. 

the idea behind the show was that since this annex has been given as free space to RomanSusan for an impermanent amount of time, they wanted to open it up to the community in much the same way. one day last month, anyone could drop off 1 artwork they wanted to exhibit among everyone else's and the fresh drawings on the wall.

An exercise in space management, modest means, and timeliness. The Wide Open is part of series of upcoming programming which aims to develop new, locally-focused opportunities to display, create, and experience art in the Rogers Park neighborhood.

we took a quick spin around, met some lovely people. the show, though incredibly varied in artwork, was fun to see, hung together well and made a positive space for visitors. well done!

The Sketchbook Project 2013 Participant

last year i heard about this great project where anybody can simply pay a small entrance fee, receive a sketchbook with 32 pages and fill it up with whatever you want before January 16th. THEN the book gets put in a sketchbook collection that travels the world and eventually lands permanently in the Brooklyn Art Library. people can 'check out' your sketchbook and you'll get an email saying when this happens.

It’s like a concert tour, but with sketchbooks.
Thousands of sketchbooks will be exhibited at galleries and museums as they make their way on tour across the world.
After the tour, all sketchbooks will enter into the permanent collection of The Brooklyn Art Library, where they will be barcoded and available for the public to view.

Sensing Space: an art exhibit

for the first time since college, i'm being asked by an outside source to create art for an actual art space. not to be shoved in a box or envelope. not to be hung on a someone's wall at home. not to be a potential money maker. just to be an expression and experience.

many people in the show are approaching this workshop purely as 'teacher' and not 'artist.' it's refreshing to see adult, 'non-artists' become artists in ways they've never thought about. it's fun for me to be able to be in this grey area of both. expectations have changed and so has meaning. it's relaxed, it's a little silly, it's fun again.

here's the thing: i have NO idea what will be actually exhibited! even my own piece is a bit of a mystery. and the opening is 4 days away....umm, pretty exciting and pretty uncomfortable at the same time.

maybe someday soon i can do this same type of thing without being asked by anyone but myself...



update: the following pictures are my contributions to this group show. i created multiple circles with a grommet that were useful for many things.

the first 5 were photographs i displayed nearby the installation which is also shown below. i loved how the circles began to drop to the floor and the grass drooped as it dried out. everything is cyclical.

even made a hair accessory for the opening night.
